Separate textile collection becomes mandatory across the EU

As of January 1, 2025, separate collection of textiles became mandatory across the European Union, and member states began transposing extended producer responsibility rules that make brands financially responsible for what happens to clothing at end of life, according to Zero Waste Europe and other policy trackers. EU targets call for at least half of textiles placed on the market to be prepared for reuse or recycled by 2025, rising to 75 percent by 2030.

Regulation is the quiet force that will reshape resale economics. When brands must pay for disposal, reuse and resale stop being optional sustainability gestures and start being the cheaper compliance path. The infrastructure that can absorb used inventory at scale gains pricing power.
